You receive error “193: .msi is not a valid Win32 application” trying to install an MSI Package on Windows Server 2008 x64 Core Install

You have a Windows Server 2008 x64 Core Install and you are trying to install a package.

At the command prompt, you are typing :

C:\> "thepackage.msi"

And you receive error :

C:\> "thepackage.msi"

Access is denied.

You think of using ‘runas’ command and try the following.

C:\>runas /user:test@domain.net "thepackage.msi"

You obtain:

C:\>runas /user:test@domain.net "thepackage.msi"

Enter the password for test@domain.net:

Attempting to start thepackage.msi as user " test@domain.net " …

RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run – thepackage.msi

193: thepackage.msi is not a valid Win32 application.
